Roots of Hate: Fascist and Fundamentalist Narratives and Actors in the Caribbean

This report examines how anti-gender and anti-rights movements are expanding across the region within a broader context of imperialism, authoritarianism, racial capitalism and ongoing crisis. Building on Noor’s previous regional mappings on South-West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and South and Southeast Asia (SSEA), the research traces the legal, financial and ideological infrastructures shaping contemporary fascist and fundamentalist projects in the Caribbean. The mapping situates these movements within interconnected realities: economic precarity, climate catastrophe, extractivism, shrinking civic space and the continued geopolitical dominance of the United States in the region. It documents how anti-rights actors operate through court cases, legislation, regional organizing and transnational networks, while highlighting the disproportionate impact on queer, trans, feminist, Indigenous, Black and working-class communities. At the same time, the research centers the long histories of Caribbean resistance and political thought. Grounded in feminist, anti-imperialist analysis and shaped alongside the work of regional scholars, activists and movements, this mapping aims to contribute to ongoing struggles for gender justice, sovereignty and collective liberation across the Caribbean.
